Rogaining:

Rogaining is team sport of long distance cross-country navigation and enjoying. It is closely related to orienteering and many people enjoy both sports. The events can take up to 24 hours on route choosen by the competitors.

Competition Centre

The Competition Center of Retki-Rogaining is at the sports institute Kisakeskus in Raseborg .
There will be road signs leading from road 25, through villages of Karjaa and Pohja to direct you to the center. Please just follow the Retki-Rogaining signs.

Parking

There will be a car park at the sports institute Kisakeskus. The car park is close to the competition center.

Accommodation

Accommodation in rooms for 2, 3 or 4 persons with generous breakfast can be booked from Kisakeskus at price of 35 euros/person. Code word for booking is “Retki-Rogaining”, tel +358 19 223 0300.

Teams can camp on the area shown by the organizers from Friday afternoon until Sunday afternoon. Breakfast is available at a nominal price also for persons who are camping. All accommodation and camping is at the event center.

Registration and material

The teams shall register after having arrived to the competition center to gain competition material. The registration is possible on Friday 20.00-21.00 and on Saturday 07.00-08.30. Each team will get number bibs, safety pins, SI-cards and other material used during the competition.

The maps are given at 9.00 on Saturday morning.

Teams are responsible for the material they receive and there is a fee of 80 euro for a lost SI-card.

Map

The map is in scale 1:40 000 and has contour intervals of 5 meters.

The map is printed on one 80 cm x 70 cm sized paper. Each team member will receive his/her own map and a plastic map cover.

Some new paths and roads are not marked on the map. The stones shown in map are clear in the terrain but on the other hand all stones which seem to be large and clearly visible in the terrain are not marked in the map. As well the marking of open bedrock and steeps is in some cases varying but in general the appearance of the map corresponds well with the scale. Minor objects are not marked at all. All open cuts are not shown in the map. There are some restricted areas shown on the maps where it is not allowed to move outside marked paths and roads.

Competitors shall not enter into yards or otherwise disturb local people. There are some new houses which are not shown on the map. More information about map you will get on competition material.

Note! A train track for high speed trains passes through the competition area. Keep away 20 meters of the track. Do not cross the track on any other places than shown on the map.

Course

Teams may visit the controls in any order. Teams are allowed to plan the course inside a specific building and in competitors own tents. Most parts of the competition area are forestry lands and parts are protected areas. There are many small lakes in the competition are, crossing the lakes by swimming is forbidden.

Controls

The controls are marked with an orange-white flag and a reflector. There is also a SI-unit at each control. There is a model control at start area.

The controls are numbered from 20 to 110. The first digit indicates tens of points of the control, e.g. control number 24 gives 20 points. Controls with three digits are worth 100 points, e.g. number 110 gives 100 points.

Control descriptions will be given on a separate sheet of paper. Refreshment controls are shown in the control descriptions.

Punching

The SI (Sport Ident) timing system is used. SI-card must be cleared before start. A team must punch the controls they wish to gain points.

Every team member has his/her own SI-card. In case of a lost SI-card it is possible to receive new one from the competition center but the controls on the lost card must be visited again to gain the points. A team is responsible for clearing the SI-card at start area.

If the card is not cleared it does not record any controls. SI-card will be mounted on competitor’s wrist and if the sealing is broken on the finish line the team will lose all the points.

Visiting controls

All team members must stay together, i.e. within 20 metres from each other during the whole race and all team members must punch within 60 seconds. The behaviour of the teams is monitored during the event.

Competitors are not allowed to rest within 100 meters from control, unless the control is a refreshment control. Competitors are not allowed to spoil or damage controls, refreshment controls or any other structures built by organizer.

Refreshment controls

There will be springs, wells or water containers at refreshment controls. Competitors are not allowed to spoil, to use water excessively or use water for washing up at refreshment controls. The taps must not be left running.

Start and finish

Start and finish are located in sports institute area. Competitors shall finish latest on Saturday at 22.00 (8h) or on Sunday at 12.00 (24h).

For missing the time line, a team will be penalized with 10 points for each starting minute.

In 8-hour event teams finishing more than 15 minutes late will be disqualified and stated as late arrivals. In 24-hour event team finishing more than 30 minutes late will be disqualified and stated as late arrival.

Obligatory equipment

For your own safety each team must carry

* a mobile phone in a waterproof package (working in finnish mobile network, Phone must be closed from saturday 11.30 AM until finishing the race)
* a first aid kit with emergency blanket (space model accepted)
* first aid gauze (pack or two rolls)
* plaster
* sports tape


Each competitor must have

* a whistle
* a water container
* some food
* a cap
* spare undershirt
* windproof jacket
* torch (e.g. head light)

All obligatory equipment must be carried all the time. You cannot leave any obligatory equipment on the trail, not even for a short period of time. However, you can leave other than obligatory equipment on the trail, but only after the start of the race and you must have it with you when you finish your race. You are not allowed to leave equipment on the trail and pick it up after the race.

Meals during the competition

During the competition competitors can eat and drink in the restaurant tent. There will be paella with chicken, and also paella for vegetarians, bread, pickled cucumber, potato chips, bananas, water and juice served. This service is included in registration fee.

First aid

Each team must have a first aid kit. At the competition office there will be first aid equipment for injuries, but not for teams to take on the course.

In the case of emergency

If your team faces an emergency during the competition, you must notify the organizers of the event immediately for further assistance, if it is needed.

If in case the emergency is life threatening, you must call 112, the common emergency number. If it is a less hazardous emergency, please call the organizers number 040 733 5712. There is a 24 hour service at this number. Please register this number on the mobile phone which you carry with you during the race.

You can switch on your mobile phone during the race, but only in case of emergency. Using of mobile phones will be monitored. You may call 040 733 5712 also if a checkpoint has been vandalized, there is no water at a water post or you come across another technical problem along the course.

Toilets

There are toilets at the competition center. In the terrain there are no toilets by the organizer.

Shower and sauna

There is a washing possibility after the race.

Meal after competition

There will be warm meal served for two hours after the finishing time in the restaurant tent.

Prize giving ceremony

Prizes will be awarded 2 hours after the finishing time of both events in the competition center.

In the 8-hour event the best team (one) will be awarded a prize and then there is also a lottery.

In 24-hour event the best teams are awarded prizes. The number of prizes depends on the number of teams in each class. Three best teams are awarded prizes if there are ten or more teams in results list in that class, two teams are awarded prizes if 5-9 teams are in that class or one team if 3-4 teams are in that class.

If there are less than two teams in a class in results list, then this class will be joining next younger age category when awarding prizes. During the ceremony there will be also some lottery prizes for participants and to receive such a prize you have to be present in person to collect the prize.

Special rules for competition centre

Competition center is in a sports institute area. There will be other type of events happening and foreign people at the same time in the area nearby. Nevertheless, competition center is a compact area and will be marked clearly. There will be 24 hour monitoring in the area by the organizers, but be careful with your belongings.

Making fire is allowed only in dedicated places.
